The current practice of Pediatric Radiology at Primary Children's Medical Center (PCMC) has its roots in the 1960’s when Dr. Virgil Condon replaced his former mentor Dr. John Caffey, who had briefly been on the staff at PCMC. Dr. Condon is the father of pediatric radiology at PCMC and in the Intermountain West. He guided a one room, one machine radiology department over 30 years to become a full service imaging department of national prominence. He recruited several other talented radiologists to join him during his tenure. The radiology department was initially located in the west wing of the old red brick Primary Children’s Hospital on 12th Avenue. In 1990, Primary Children’s moved to its current 5 story facility on the University campus at 100 North Medical Drive.

In the mid 1990’s, the leadership of the pediatric radiology practice passed to Dr. Richard Boyer, who led the group for ten years. Under his leadership, additional radiologists were recruited, new imaging modalities were added and services were expanded. Currently, the president of Pediatric Radiology, PC, is Dr. Keith White and the Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Medical Imaging is Dr. Gary Hedlund.

There are now (2007) 13 pediatric radiologists practicing at PCMC.

Each has had one or two years of training as a pediatric radiologist after their radiology residency and holds Certificates of Added Qualification in Pediatric Radiology. Several have also had additional sub-specialty training and are certified in other sub-specialties such as Neuroradiology or Interventional Radiology, as well. Each pediatric radiologist has been specially trained at a major pediatric hospital in the USA or Canada and brings with him/her a high level of expertise and a commitment to the care of children. These radiologists supervise a full spectrum of imaging services for infants, children and adolescents including general diagnostic radiology, ultrasound, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging and interventional radiology. The radiologists work closely with the staff of the Medical Imaging Department at PCMC to provide the highest possible quality of state-of-the-art imaging services to the children and their families of the Intermountain West.
